MUNICIPAL MANAGER

Media Statement

The issue of water shortage or interruptions of water supply within Meqheleng and surrounding areas has been with us for some time and there are numerous factors.

In the past 36 months (3 years) we have continually received less than average rainfall including the worst drought in 2015. The result is that despite recent rains, our sources of raw water remain suspect. The water levels are low but also because of aging infrastructure, our pumps at the abstraction point break frequently. While we have already processed replacement of those pumps it does not automatically mean we will have continuous supply of water from the Caledon.

The Municipality has and will continue to implement water restrictions and valve management through which we provide water in the mornings and in the evenings. While low lying areas get water throughout the day, those in high areas will be affected during the day and peak periods.

We can only appeal to our communities to use water sparingly and observe restrictions placed. The current water levels within the Caledon and Meulspruit will not last until the next rain season. People must start appreciating that we are a water under resourced country and this drought phenomenon is with us to stay.

On the issue of the death of Ms Malehlohonolo Rose Mohlaping we have expressed our condolences to the family and may her soul and that of the driver rest in peace.

The allegations about her fetching water are both spurious and devoid of any truth and substance. On the day of the incident, there was water in Meqheleng and according to the reports which are still under investigations by the police, the accident happened deep inside Lesotho in Bela- Bela next to Mapoteng. We just wish to respect the process and warn against irresponsible sensationalising of news.

For enquiries contact: Mr Tshepiso Ramakarane – 082 906 2015

Media Statement

Indeed for the past days, the community of Ficksburg/Meqheleng has been experiencing shortage of water. This is influenced by broken pump at Ficksburg Treatment Plant. Currently the Municipality is utilizing 2 pumps, one from Meulspruit and one from Ficksburg Treatment Plant and unfortunately the capacity of these pumps alone cannot carry the current demand.

The Municipality has however appointed a service provider who will procure new pumps to replace the current pumps that has ran out of life span. However it must be noted that these new pumps are manufactured overseas and therefore it might take a while to arrive but to address the current situation, the appointed service provider will install a temporary pump to augment the current 2 pumps and anticipation is to restore water supply as soon as installation is complete.

In the meantime the Municipality will continue with valve management between 17h00 – 20h00 in the evening and 04h00 – 08h00 in the morning (water will be opened).

The Municipality would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by the situation and takes this opportunity to thank community’s patience during this entire time.

Media Statement – Clocolan Incident

In respect of the media statement released by Arrive Alive on Saturday 25 March 2017, Setsoto Local Municipality would like to convey its deepest sympathy to the family of the young boy who lost his life as a result of drowning. However, the municipality wishes to state the following on record:

It is indeed regrettable that a young life was lost as a result of uncovered manhole, an old manhole located at the outskirts of the location near Mokodumela Section in Hlohlolwane. This was an used or abandoned manhole that was never operational, it is very unfortunate that despite the municipality twice fencing it as a result of security measure theft and vandalism by members of the community continued now such incentive act claimed the life of a child today. The damage that was caused at this infrastructure led to the covers of the manhole being ripped off, fencing, roof structure and all steel material stolen.

The Municipality would also like to emphasise that the cause of death was not sewer in the manhole as portrayed but water from the recent rain as the manhole was not functional. The Municipality deeply regrets what has happened and sends its sincere condolences to the family and the community at large. The municipality wishes to convey a stern warning to community members who are constantly vandalising municipal properties and ultimately causing such demise to communities.
