Media Statement

Indeed for the past days, the community of Ficksburg/Meqheleng has been experiencing shortage of water. This is influenced by broken pump at Ficksburg Treatment Plant. Currently the Municipality is utilizing 2 pumps, one from Meulspruit and one from Ficksburg Treatment Plant and unfortunately the capacity of these pumps alone cannot carry the current demand.

The Municipality has however appointed a service provider who will procure new pumps to replace the current pumps that has ran out of life span. However it must be noted that these new pumps are manufactured overseas and therefore it might take a while to arrive but to address the current situation, the appointed service provider will install a temporary pump to augment the current 2 pumps and anticipation is to restore water supply as soon as installation is complete.

In the meantime the Municipality will continue with valve management between 17h00 – 20h00 in the evening and 04h00 – 08h00 in the morning (water will be opened).

The Municipality would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by the situation and takes this opportunity to thank community’s patience during this entire time.

Media Statement – Clocolan Incident

In respect of the media statement released by Arrive Alive on Saturday 25 March 2017, Setsoto Local Municipality would like to convey its deepest sympathy to the family of the young boy who lost his life as a result of drowning. However, the municipality wishes to state the following on record:

It is indeed regrettable that a young life was lost as a result of uncovered manhole, an old manhole located at the outskirts of the location near Mokodumela Section in Hlohlolwane. This was an used or abandoned manhole that was never operational, it is very unfortunate that despite the municipality twice fencing it as a result of security measure theft and vandalism by members of the community continued now such incentive act claimed the life of a child today. The damage that was caused at this infrastructure led to the covers of the manhole being ripped off, fencing, roof structure and all steel material stolen.

The Municipality would also like to emphasise that the cause of death was not sewer in the manhole as portrayed but water from the recent rain as the manhole was not functional. The Municipality deeply regrets what has happened and sends its sincere condolences to the family and the community at large. The municipality wishes to convey a stern warning to community members who are constantly vandalising municipal properties and ultimately causing such demise to communities.
